Question on slow start on 2000 Firebird

Asked by Jul 15, 2017 at 12:09 AM about the 2000 Pontiac Firebird Base

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2000 Firebird can take anywhere from 5 to 30 seconds to turn over once
I turn the key and I have to hold it until it starts.  Once it starts it is good for
the day, regardless of how many times I start it, but the next morning it will
do it again.
It has a new battery, so that is not the issue.
Any thoughts?

is there a starter relay involved ?

I would start with my spark plugs and spark plug wires maybe do a full tune up on it replace your spark plugs and spark plug wire set and I would also wonder if not your coil pack power might be reduced in some way maybe your coil packs one of them's bad but do a proper tune up and start there and see if that doesn't clean it up clean up the issue good luck.

I am not sure if the starter relay is involved. The odd thing about this is it only happens when I first start the car after it sits overnight. It starts up with no problem the rest of the day. That is what is perplexing. I took it to a electrical shop and they could not figure out anything.

Again , when's the last time you've done a complete tune up on it? It might just be the whole problem!

you'd have to trouble shoot it when the problem occurs ,does it have an alarm system ? It's like the honda we have , my son said "I didn't think that back window works " well today it decided to go up and down , go figure .

you should scan for codes even if the light ain't on , a minor fault may be to blame telling the ecm not to function , a fail safe I guess , like the guy says do a tune up,
