Did the shop mess up my van?

I have a 2001 pontiac montana, had it for 4.5 years,
with on and off problems. A few months back, the
brakes started failing on me. They would squish
down to the floor without breaking, then when
pressed a second or third time, they'd finally stop
the car. I took it into a shop and had the breaks
fixed - I'm a clueless ladybrain about cars - and the
problem wasn't fixed. So, I took it back and had the
brake cylinders fixed. Not that either. My hub tried
to do the brake booster on his own. Fast forward
two months, I was sick of watching it sit in my
driveway, so I called a tow and had it hauled back
to the shop. They fixed that, and lo and behold, the
problem was still a problem. So, the owner finally
says he thinks it's the master cylinder.  We pay him
to fix that, and we leave happily with our now
breaking car.

The next day, it overheats. We are in Cali, and the
temp had been 112* that day, so we let it cool, and
went on our merry way. My hub drove it to work the
next day, and it overheated on the way there. After
he left work, it wouldn't start without a jump. Then
it overheated after only a few miles. So, he let it
cool, and I jumped it again, then he would squeeze
the coolant thing because water wasn't getting to
the radiator - it was cool to the touch in the middle
of a hot engine. We followed in this fashion the 19
miles back to the shop.

The guy is saying that we blew a head gasket, our
fault entirely, but my husband suspects that the
tubing wasn't properly reinstalled. I am so
frustrated about this, I could die. Do cars this old
just blow all of a sudden, because they're gnarly
and awful, or could this be the fault of the
mechanics?

sounds more like a water pump or thermostat. the engine coolant thermostat regulates when and how much water flows into the engine depending on the coolant temp, if the thermostat dosnt open it causes the engine to get hot beacuse lack of coolant flow. if the thermostat is stuck open the engine will take longer to come to operating temp. the water pump is driven by the drive belt. the water pump normally goes to do age and wear typically you will see water dripping from the pump its self out of the weep hole. overheating can cause the head to warp but typically a head gasket will wear with heating and cooling of the engine.. you could have the mechanic check the radiator for exhaust gasses in the radiatior to see if the head gasket is blown. if its not the head gasket try having the thermostat replaced and have them check your water pump

The water pump or thermostat failed and you/yall kept on driving it and causing to over heat multiple times this is what caused the head gasket/s to fail not that the head gasket failed all a sudden, so it only take one good overheating to blow head gasket. Always watch your temp gauge for fluctuations and if it does so then tow not drive to the shop for repairs, it could just have been the thermostat and 30 minute cheap repair plus the tow, now its not even worth the value to fix it, just junk it and go buy a new car. These aluminum head warp when overheating fast, so if you do repair used a new head of find a used one and test for warp before using it, if either has been warped it will not last long and a waste of money to use it as you will visit this issue again in 6 months to a year.

Never keep driving a car that has overheated and continues too, if temp gauge going up, if you did and stopped before letting it go to the red it would not have warped the head, that is what has happened (warped head metal) so just ahead gasket replacement will not last long.

Overheating today's vehicles can cause head gasket problems and engine failure. If you drove it while it was overheated it is entirely your fault.
