Ticking sound

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I owe a 2001 Pontiac Bonneville with just over
164,000 miles. In the last couple of weeks I have
noticed a ticking sound coming from the engine. It
almost sounds like a rock in a tire or an alarm
clock. It increases with speed and slows when I let
off the gas. I've had several repairs in the last
couple of years but most recently would have been
the upper and lower intake, which was repaired
sometime in March I believe. Someone please help
cuz my dad and I can't seem to figure it out. He
thinks it might be something with the tappets and
maybe putting an additive in it would help the
situation but I just don't know.

Old post yes with no answer. Try replacing the egr valve. Mine made ticking noise, thought it was lifters also. Had an egr code. Got a used GM one from a u pull yard. Don't buy a new cheapo one. I bought a cheap one after I did upper intake/lower gasket. It was garbage. Didn't tick until about a week after I put the new one in and the code came back. Installed the used one and the noise and code gone. Egr is located right above the rear valve cover ds area, and would pulse / tick with the rpm just like lifters. 2 nuts is all to remove.
