what was cause my 2002 bonneville to not go into drive but has all others gears

I got in it after just driving it the night before and tried taking off only 6 hrs after parking it but it has no drive but has all other gears and no problems prior to this

Sounds as if your shift solenoids may be defective, this is something that will need to be done at a good transmission shop

so maybe I don't need to replace the tranny itself? also I heard there is more than one tranny for my car and in order to find out what one I have or would need they have to pull mine out first, is that true or is there another way '
