engine stopped. wont start, thought timing belt but not it

I have a 1.8, on a long trip home (100 miles) temp gauge went all way to hot. I pulled over, shut off car, cooled off, checked coolant -seemed okay. Drove home with windows open and heater on full. next morning drove to work, at first no problem but then under load, lots of valve clatter upon coasting motor was quiet. Almost to work, motor died with no get up and go on acceleration. Thought timing belt broke but inspection showed was okay. Motor turns okay but does not start. Any suggestions?

could have either warped the clyinder, do a compression test that will tell u that... or could have jumped timeing... the 4g63 turbo or non, there known to jump timing, witch in that case will or did lead to blown motor.. also check ur spark, if there isnt check the distributer and/or cap.. thats bout all i can come up with without lookin at it n seeing it, hope it helps n sorry if it doesnt.. good luck!

It's a 1.8 4g37 according to his post. Now they aren't known to jump timing, there are more teeth engaged per gear on the cam sprockets. Also, the 4g63 is known to jump after a faulty t-belt change, and he made no mention of a change. But it's always a good idea to line up timing marks and see if they're on and check the belt tension. With all that noise, have you checked your oil? Do you have spark and fuel?
