Our '96 Ranger has the same issue. Sensor has been replaced, EGR cleaned, the dealership scratched their heads and told us "Sorry, we don't know what it is". Our regular mechanic has guess, so did the dealership, but the part is not manufactured anymore and would have to be tracked down from a wrecking yard. The guess fix (a part they referred to as (the brain) would cost $200-500 to maybe stop the problem.

is it every time? A high idle is typical in the warm-up sequence for the first few minutes of driving.

The internet sure leaves you hanging!!! It is 2020 and my 1994 ranger, 2.3l, does this all the time. Fast idle upon clutch-in. Only way to stop it is a) wait 20 seconds or so, b) turn car off then on and idle is fine, c) lug engine a bit under slight clutch and brake at stoplight and, again, it disappears. Internet is full of these exact symptoms with no answers except guessing. Some people have died bc of this issue. Everyone is scratching their head. Any one know the answer?

I have the same problem but now It’s getting worse, after shifting it into neutral it keeps on revving higher where before it would wouldn’t rev by itself and slow down after a few seconds. I noticed it stops revving after turning off the A/C

Ford has an ECM update that will eliminate this problem.
