SHIFTED OUT OF 2WD ON MY 96 EXPORER AND NOW I CAN'T GET IT TO DO ANYTHING

Asked by martymarman May 25, 2015 at 05:18 PM about the 1996 Ford Explorer 4 Dr XLT 4WD SUV

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Sitting still, I shifted out of 2wd to 4wlow and it acted like it was in neutral. Tried shifting back into 2wd and nothing.   With motor running, shifted the transmission into park and it sounded like it was grinding.   Had to shut off motor and return shifter to park.  Long story short.  The truck in stuck in my driveway and appears to be stuck in neutral.   Please, PLEASE help.  Thank you in advance.

I'm sorry, but, you probably need a transmission overhaul. It's a 96, how many miles on your vehicle?

895

This is a rare answer as most immediately say rebuild tranny, I had the same issue and am glad I found your repsonse. I'm going to try your suggesstion on a 2001 Chevy Silverado 1500 HD 4WD I just purchased, ran find for about 100 miles then I got stuck in neutral according to local mechanic, not specialist. thanks, N.
