My 1996 Ford Explorer has been on a tow truck three times now...all for flywheel problems.

Asked by merrill0114 Jun 02, 2014 at 04:21 PM about the 1996 Ford Explorer 4 Dr XLT SUV

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The first flywheel had a large hole in the center, and it was replaced (July 2013).
Second time (March 2014) was same, but transmission service owner said that he
believed it failed due to a spacer in which he replaced as well as the torque converter
and the front pump seal. He charged no labor, or for the flywheel. Third time (May
2014), he said that he went with the Ford flywheel, instead of an aftermarket one. He
believes that these have been failing due to the engine hydrolocking. This makes no
sense to me. Help!

Thanks! BTW, my transmission was overhauled by APEX Transmission in Longwood, Fl. (June, 2013). Would the front pump that you spoke of, been replaced at that time?
