How to replace timing belt cover gasket 1996 Ford Explorer

I have a 1996 2wd Explorer 4.0L V6 that is leaking coolant around the front timing chain cover. Is it necessary to remove the oil pan in order to replace the timing cover gasket?
Does the engine need to be taken out to remove the oil pan on this vehicle?

its a good idea to replace the oil pan gasket at the same time, but I don't think you have to. I think you just have to take the the front 2 bolts out of the oil pan, as they thread into the timing cover. I don't remember ever doing an oil pan on an 4x4 explorer or 4x4 ranger...but I have done a couple on 2wd rangers, and the transmission had to come out.
