Hydraulic Valve Lifter Noise

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have hydraulic valve noise at all RPM. I removed valve cover and identified the rocker arm with play, but it has no adjustments. I do not see any type of hydraulic lifter, but the Haybes Manual says valves are hydraulic with no adjustment. Where is the hydraulic lifter?  Can it be replaced?

The hydraulic lifter is located in the rocker arm where it contacts the valve step. It is only about the size of a pencil in diameter. The faulty rocker arm can be individually replaced. Remove the rocker arm shaft, slide the rocker arms off the shaft until you get to the defective rocker arm and reinstall in the opposite sequence that everything was removed. You may need to clean oily deposits from the shaft prior to sliding rocker arms off.

This is for engines with more than one faulty lifter. Another way to fix it, is to submerge the rocker arm into engine degreaser all night long. Don't use the metal can spray container, better use the other spray without gas. Later with plumbing pliers press the lifter gradually and several times until it gets totally inside the rocker arm. Do it inside the degreaser, you might see the clogged oil coming out, which is a very good sign. Repeat the procedure until the lifter gets inside in an easy way. Also check the holes to be clean, you can use a thin metal wire and a needle for this purpose. Dry up the rocker arm and submerge it into car oil. With your hand press the lifter several times as well. You can install back the rocker arm. After turning the car On, wait in idle until the tic tic sound is gone, because will make the sound for a while due to the lifter filling up itself with oil from the engine. If, by any reason, the tic tic sound comes back after a week or three months in the fixed rocker arm or in another one, then you might have a greater problem, like a flat camshaft that is not high enough to rise up the rocker arm and that causes the problem to come back. In your case, when is only one lifter, it is not painful to replace it, but if you have three or more faulty lifters, you are talking of spending up to a hundred bucks, and is better trying to clean them first.

you need to change the oil to the correct viscosity. it must be 5- 20 or 5-30.
