My 98 Nissan Maxima starts when i connect jump wire, but it stops immediately when i disconnect jump wire ?

On the way back home from work my nissan maxima stopped running, and all lights,
electrical power were out... Now it will start when i connect a jump wire from another car,
but it stops immediately when i disconnect jump wire. Should i replace the alternator first?

yes I would think the alternator is at fault here.
