Smells hot

103° day out car travels at 15 mph for 20
mins gets hot no water in radiator ok cool it
off add water seems fine 2wks later in traffic
on highway start then stop temp gage goes
up so I turn on heater it stays a bit above
half  this all happened 6 months ago now
car smells hot but there is a full radiator and
temp gage stays below half way mark .what
could be making it smell hot
