2000 Nissan Maxima starts but dies over 15-20 seconds

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Vehicle starts and will surge to about 2,000 RPM on start but slowly sputters
and dies over 15-20 seconds.  The subsequent start attempts do the same
thing but don't quite hit 2,000 RPM.  It's had a service engine light for years but
I've never had a scanner to clear and check codes.

Sounds like a clogged fuel filter.. Best to bring it to a local service provider to have a look. You could also take it to AutoZone/Advance and ask if they will check the codes using an OBDII reader for free.

Was thinking it was the fuel filter or the fuel pump. The assembly is in the tank which is accessable from under the back seat. I'll have to get it running to get it to Autozone. Fortunately there is one about six blocks from me I just never think of it.
