why does my rear brake light flash four times when i brake?

When I press my brake pedal, the rear brake light in the rear window flashes four times before remaining solidly lit.  I understand this is a safety feature to warn other drivers I am braking.  Is there a way to turn off this safety feature of having the light flash four times?

Check your hybrid features in your owner manual. I suspect it has something to do with regenerative braking.
