2000 Frontier XE "hickups" while idling at at stop (traffic light).

Asked by jimbelzer Mar 13, 2011 at 01:55 PM about the 2000 Nissan Frontier 2 Dr SE 4WD Extended Cab SB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

While I am idling at a traffic light the truck will "hickup" like it wants to stall out. When I am driving, it seems ok. At first teh hickuping was very irregular, now it is several times while I am sitting at a light. The check engine light comes on, but the last time it came on and I had it checked, nothing came up in teh codes that would match teh fuel system or O2 sensor.

i had the same problem and the distributor finaly went out on the truck . what happens is that the coils break down in the distributor and then it will just shut down i thought is was a fuel problem i change out the fuel pump and then i drove it to work the next day and as the truck wormed up it started missing and then quit again . this is a comon problem with these frontiers .

Were there ANY codes ? Does the idle seem erratic ( stumbles or idles too high, sometimes won't accel from a stop when you press on the gas pedal ) ? Sounds to me like you are describing a faulty cam position sensor or ( if you are having any of the symptoms I mentioned above ) accelerator position sensor. The codes should be active when you have the check engine light on but, when the check engine light goes off the ECM "sees" everything is ok and the code becomes inactive.
