Car won't move in Drive, acts like neutral

Asked by Reefdiver24 Nov 04, 2015 at 08:23 AM about the 2001 Nissan Frontier 2 Dr XE Extended Cab SB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The truck won't move when I put it in drive in
the mornings, but reverse works fine. I have
to get it moving in 1 or 2 then warm it up to
be able to use D. What's wrong?

Check the transmission fluid level but your symptoms are for a transmission that needs a re-build.

I have the exact same problem with my 2001 Nissan xterra, have to start out in first or second or its just like being in neutral, once its moving drive works fine, appears to be a flaw in the transmission design or a reacurring failing part, I got rid of it fast and moved on to something better maybe you should to.

Less than $50,00 for the shifting solenoids on Ebay. Watch a few YouTubes to see where they are or find an honest mechanic to install them in the transmission. Over time the solenoids get dirty and stick. Warming up the transmission loosens the gunk. Cold gunk prevents the solenoid from working.
