How rare is a 70 Chevelle SS 454 LS5 with a horseshoe shifter?
The horseshoe was the shifter for all automatics. So it's as rare as a SS 454 with an automatic transmission.
From what I've read there was 3 options for shifters Horseshoe, column, and floor. And that info was from GM Heritage. I also read that horseshoe shifters are extremely rare for LS5 and LS6 Chevelles.
In my seventy-two years on this earth an SS fan with an uncle who used to own a Chevrolet dealership, I can state the following: 1. the 1970 SS 454 was available with a bench seat and I recall only a few that had an automatic, and they had a column shifter. 2. All SS 454 automatics were the M40, three-speed, not two, and theoretically could have had buckets without console that had a column shifter, but I've never seen one. 3. All 1970 SS 454s with bucket seats and console were available with the automatic, but the shifter would not have been the single stick shift that was available in lower packages, but would have been the standard horseshoe type, and there were no options available for other floor mounted automatic shifters..... I've see these cars with a stick automatic shifter and even with a four-speed automatic, but none were authentic originals.
I read on GM heritage that you could get all shifters for an SS and a horseshoe is extremely rare.
