2002 Nissan Altima 3.5 SE Shuts off while driving

Asked by Sep 27, 2012 at 08:40 PM about the 2002 Nissan Altima 3.5 SE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2002 Nissan 3.5 SE. While driving the car just shuts off. It has been starting back and I normally don't drive further than 10 miles at one time. It is doing this nearly every time I drive it now normally after 10-20 min of drivetime. The crankshaft sensor that was supposed to be replaced per recall was done in 2008. I've had the same thing happen with cars in the past and it was twice an oxygen sensor. Can it be diagnosed?

Can you explain in detail what you mean by it shuts down? Does it start running rough first? Or does it just die? Do you have lights, radio, etc? How long before it allows you to restart it?

that's about what my 06 is doing, but the drive times have been a little longer, mine died easy, barley noticed it died, but again both times *thankfully* it happened as I was parking.

That's exactly what my 2002 Nissan Altima 3.5 SE has been doing! It just shuts off, doesn't matter how fast or slow you're going, either. There are still lights. I put it in neutral, turn the ignition off and then start it again, and put it back in drive. It restarts, you just never know how long it's going to last. I've had it parked for over a week because I'm too afraid to drive it until I figure out what to do about it. The power steering and brakes go out when that happens and it's hard to drive. I had my teenage daughter with me last time. I heard about the recall and called the nearest Nissan dealership and they said that my car's VIN isn't on the list. A month ago, I couldn't get it started at the grocery store at all and had to have it towed to a shop. They said the camshaft sensor had gone out and replaced it.

Jrperez did replacing that sensor did that take care of it

I have 2003 Altima, Mine was shutting off when sitting at a light etc. Throws no codes. Does it randomly. Turned out to be the electronic throttle body sticking. I replaced myself with Hitachi (OEM) part and it has worked fine since. I used same part as original and idle did not have to be adjusted. Sometimes replacing electronic throttle body it will have to be programmed by dealer to idle correctly. Not in my case. Part was $85 on Amazon.
