Won't idle unless depressing gas. Service engine light is on. Went to auto zone and they could not get a reading.Just installed alternator and new battery. When driving it runs great

There should be an air idle control sensor, they get gummed up, Auto Zone can test it, but you need to clean the port also where is fits into. Another thing would be the throttle position sensor that can be tested, and the information these sensors gets comes from the temperature sending unit. Things to check...
