Why does O/D gear turn on when car is started

Asked by Mar 30, 2008 at 04:22 PM about the 2003 Nissan Sentra GXE

Question type: General

I notice that when I turn off the ignition and then restart the car, the O/D gear is on.  If I press the O/D button, a light comes on saying O/D off.
Should the O/D not be on just for higher highway speeds?

depends, I drive with the O/D on all the time, unless I am in the truck and towing/hauling. The O/D will optimize your gear setting so you get the best fuel mileage. Some people only use it when they are on the highway, I perfer to take advantage of the extra gear to get the best mileage as much as I can. It is a personal preferance.

Most cars have O/D on as a default, turning it off is the option.
