'Key' icon lit up,on dash, and car alarm sounds when exiting

My husband just uses the key manually, as keyless
remote has not worked for well over a year now.  
Any ideas why alarm goes off? and/or do we need
to invest in purchasing a new keyless remote?  Any
help is appreciated, ad he just called me and it took
a while for alarm to quiet down.
