Check the transmission fluid level. Unfortunately, sounds like you have an internal transmission problem.
How cold is cold? If you have Chicago cold you will just have to allow extra warm up time.
Sounds like a valve body sticking until it's warmed up.
When the car is cold it takes 4 to 5 minutes to go in drive
