Oil leak

The car had an oil leak when I got it 2 months ago.
One day my wife was out driving on low oil (not
empty) I added a bit of oil. After this we now hear a
slight ticking when accelerating. Also we have lost
a lot of pressure when accelerating. No white
smoke and the ticking isn't getting louder but
acceleration is poor. What could be the cause of
this?

well, basically, if you do not drink anything throughout the day ( any beverage) you will slowly lose energy as well. Cars drink oil, just as good as drink gas / diesel. Sounds like you are doing a GREAT job of running it into the ground. The very first thing I do to any car I just bought, replace all fluids and filters. An engine compression test wouldn't hurt as well. but that's how I would treat any investment. your local junk yard would be happy to do business with you.

How low is low and how much is a bit? Get your oil pump and bearings in your crankcase checked ASAP before your engine locks up.
It was a little under half full. I added a quart and it was back to full. The leak is slow. Someone said I may have oil on my spark plugs and that could cause bad acceleration. Is this true?

Might not be your oil pump but it wouldn't hurt to check it. If your getting oil on your plugs, you have a blow-by problem. You need to get your bearings checked and replace your piston rings.
GREAT information Ben, I didn't realize there are bearings in a 'case. and the blow-by makes sense. if the piston is old and worn, the oil pressure will squeeze right past it and give ya problems. Very well said. i had a 280 E Mercedes that did this to me. I got rid of it. Repairs cost more than the worth of car((.
