1997 Ford explorer xlt engine

Asked by Aj Dec 02, 2018 at 11:13 PM about the 1997 Ford Explorer 4 Dr XLT AWD SUV

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 97 explorer xlt has a blown head I don't know the extent
of the damages but I know that the antifreeze is mixing
with the oil and the antifreeze comes out of the catalyst
converter and exhaust gas comes out of the radiator..  like I
said I don't know the whole extent of damage... I would like
to save the motor if possible but if not I want to know what
other type of motor is most compatible with mine... I'm not
financially well off so I need to know the cheapest way to
get my truck fixed

I delt with a dodge recently that was having the same issue. Me and my brother tore the engine apart and cleaned the hell out of it. Once she was back together she was a beast

Don't know if you have a V6 or V8. The V6 has an 4.0 OHV engine. If you want to rebuild the engine, you will have to get the casting numbers off the head and block for the V6, as the motor was revised many-many times and replacement parts need to match. Either way you go, rebuild or purchase a matching remanufactured engine, it is not going to be cheap. Especially if you cannot do the work yourself.
