on most vehicles with auto locking hubs you need to get the front tires to rotate a little beforre the four wheel drive will engage.

I would check the fuses for the 4WD system first. If everything seems to be in order then it could be a vacuum hose on the autolocking hubs or they could be stripped out on the inside so they won't lock in. Best of luck! If you need more help it's essentially the same as a Ford Ranger so you may be able to find more information on here.

There is a solenoid (plunger) on the driver's side under the transmission and almost next to the exhaust pipe, which is activated by a small vacuum canister. The plunger is attached to the 4x4 on off mechanism, and sometimes it needs to be freed up and lubricated. Remove the cotter pin and operate it by hand after a few squirts of wd40, then put the cotter pin back and try operating it from the inside cab controls. If it doesn't switch into 4 wheel and out, you may need a friend to help watch if it's moving in and out. If not you'll need a replacement unit. You should scour the wrecking yards for a used unit, since the new part is pretty expensive.

I'm having the same issue, it was working a couple days ago when i tested it before the snow came, and the first time i took it out in the snow, it engaged the first time i pressed the button, but it would not disengage. When i came to a stop, i pressed and help the button a bunch, the indicator light stayed on and when i started again, there was a violent clunk and the 4wd disengaged. my dad was able to get to engage when we started the truck up later, but the whole drivetrain disengaged essentially putting the car in neutral when he tried to disengage the 4wd. since then i have not been able to engage the 4wd after messing around with the locking hubs, and taking a quick look at the transfer case (i didn't see any issues) if you have any suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated. My truck is a 1994 Mazda B4000 4x4

Does ANYONE happen to know where you can get the replacement hub? My father in law's is stripped out & we're trying our best to find a replacement but it seems they don't sell the automatic locking hubs anywhere around here. All we can find is the manual locking hubs
