81 Fiat 2000 Electrical Problem

Hi Bruce, I have a similar problem but only for the dash lighting. The first place to look is the fusebox under the dash, which simply because of the age may have busted (they are the older ceramic and metal type, which are fortunately very cheap to replace). If all your fuses are in good order the problem will probably be a bit harder to deal with, but of course not impossible. The first thing is always simply to check the grounds in the electrical system, as dirty grounds are the cause of probably a majority of electrical problems in the Spider. If you have a voltmeter that will probably be quite helpful, although I don't have any experience with them re: the car. Do your lights work but not indicate, or are they completely non-op? If the lights themselves work, then the problem is most likely located in the dash wiring. if the lights themselves don't work, then it could be more substantial. Years ago I had 1976 fiat 124 sport convertible. It also did this crazy electrical stuff. The gauges were not working and the battery would not charge. If I hit the horn the gauges would all peg to the right. The way I would resolve it was to start the car. Then remove the pos battery terminal. Then drive around the block a few times and pow it would return to normal. I took ever fuse out every relay checked every ground and I was never able to figure it out. I think it was a floating ground issue. I replaced the alternator which was needed but it didn’t fix the issue. I used a heavier ground strap for alternator and for the dash and the battery. It was an intermittent issue so I don’t know if it was ever fixed. I sold it a few months later.
