What might be the cause of the temp.guage not working in a 97 Ford Escort LX ?

I have a 1997 Ford Escort LX that the temperature gauge does not work. What should I check first or how can I fix it ?

Its possibly the gauge sending unit that usually screws into the block on the engine

Actually, it screws into the thermostat housing and it is a common failure. $9 or so.
