Well, you've eliminated the plugs, valves and rings so far. Could still be one or more of several things. First check all the vacuum hoses for cracks, leaks or not connected. If they are all good, make sure, although it is difficult to do this, that the plug wires are properly routed to the correct plugs. Pending no problems there, next check would be to run some heavy duty fuel injector cleaner through the fuel system. Use something like Lucas or Techron and make it a rich concentration, perhaps even double the recommended dosage. Drive it through at least half a tank of gas. If this doesn't make a difference you might have bum injectors in those holes. Also, check the EGR valve to make sure its not leaking. Now, a well equipped mechanic shop will have a scanner they can connect to the car and go for a drive. They can get very close to the exact problem by doing this, especially if an injector coil is the problem. Might be worth the extra bucks to have them do the diagnotics. Good Luck!

I have had this on a few of my escorts, it always seems to be the coil pack.
