Knocking from motor

I have a 01 Eclipse GTS 3.0 24 valve crap
motor I think but I'd like to keep it running
for my kids I'm now getting a knocking
sound from the exhaust manifold or
underneath it the thermostat being out
stopping water flow cause extra pressure
in the motor on a hundred fifteen degree
day in Phoenix Arizona
