Caliper sticking

Asked by Angela Jun 30, 2018 at 11:13 PM about the 1998 Ford Taurus SE Wagon

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a '98 Ford Taurus Wagon. The
front drivers side caliper started
periodically sticking a bit, when we
replaced the pads we had a hard time
compressing it,  then it got worse to the
point it would sometimes smoke.
Replaced the caliper about a week ago,
(old one was definitely cooked by then,
boot was melted out one side with a
hole) Drove for a couple days, seemed
fine. No shake, no grab, nothing. Then
tonight, 5 days of driving later,  it started
again. Jerking in the steering wheel,
harder to accelerate, smoke rolling from
wheel  when stopped, and of course, rim
is quite hot. . So. As the issue clearly is
not the calliper, what might it be?

You have a bad rubber brake line. Bits can break off inside but not fully detach acting like a check valve holding the brakes on but also make sure the pads are not sticking in the mount most people ignore the brake hardware and the pads end up sticking in place causing a similar issue.

All mounts have been replaced and/or double checked. I'll check that rubber line though, thanks. It also has a leak in the back brake line on the same side. Would that affect it?

That shouldn't affect it i believe its just that rubber line leading to the caliper the outside might look fine but the inside could be shot.

Alright, good to know. I'll change that out and see how she goes then. Thanks bud, I'll let you know the turn out.

But if that doesn't change a thing, what's my next possibility?

Check the brake line where it goes thru the steel support. Rust had built up inside the support pinching the rubber line shut. Found this to be my problem on my 2004 STS. Hard to spot.
