No overdrive in 1987 Ramcharger with 318

Asked by Jan 14, 2019 at 08:49 AM about the 1987 Dodge Ramcharger 150 RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When out on the freeway my Ramcharger seems to top out
at about 50 mph.  It sounds like the tranny gets into 3rd, but
won't go into overdrive.

Most likely cause is a defective shift solenoid or low transmission pressure. If it hasn't been serviced in a long time, might be a burned overdrive clutch (check the fluid). But it could be due to just a dying battery. Check battery and make sure it's good; you might even put it on a charger to make sure.

Battery is fresh and solid, and fluid is nice and clear and red, but will definitely check the shift solenoid. Many thanks.
