Vehicle repair

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My Taurus is 19 years old. I must say this car has never given me any
trouble other than normal wear  & tear. She has 150,000 miles and purrs like
a kitten. Here is my problem: I am driving along and the "Over Drive Off" light
starts flashing and then the does not want to shift gears at the proper RPM. It
is as if I am pulling a load. If I pull over and put the car in park, push the
"Over Drive" button, sometimes the light will go out and sometimes I have to
pull over, turn the engine off. Restart the engine put it in drive and hope
everything works properly until I get to my destination without repeating what
I have just described again.

O/D light flashing means there are transmission fault codes stored in the system and or the trans is overheating. Your mechanic can scan the car for the specific codes. But in most cases. you will most likely require a rebuild. I would think twice spending $1500-2000K on a rebuild on a car that is worth about that much.
