changed the battery and went to make sure it would start and the check engine light is on any ideas? disconnected the neg. cable first and hooked it up last.

I replaced the battery removed neg. cable first put in the new battery and hooked up neg. cable last. Fired the car up and the check engine light was on and it wasn't on before replacing the battery. Any ideas? Is the light a result of something I did?
