should i try new battery terminals, or new steering column?

Asked by carriebaldwin Mar 02, 2016 at 09:19 AM about the 1999 Mercury Cougar Hatchback FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

i recently twisted the tip of my 99 cougar key off. i glued it back together, and
had a new key cut. it will open the doors, fit in the ignition and make the
dinging noise as it always does when the battery is engaged, but it will not
start the car. the battery terminals are a bit loose yet i didnt have this problem
with the car until the new key was made.

If you are able to turn the lock cylinder to the start position, then that should be ok. Sound like you need to clean and tighten the battery terminals.
