No resistance again key, no response when turning key

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hey everyone,
So I was driving home and had made a few stops
before this happened.  But on my last stop I
attempted to turn the key, and nothing. The key
was way too easy to turn forward and back after
the initial turn. The engine is not responding at all
and turning the key does nothing. I tried replacing
the ignition cylinder but that changed nothing aND
it was still loose. Any ideas?? I know it's something
in the steering column but don't know what. A local
shop quoted me $650 but would like to avoid
paying that much for this car to be fixed, it's
already old with 175,000 miles and body damage.
It's really something to use until I can afford to
replace it. And suggestions?

Opposite to the part you changed, you will find a part with an electric connector attached. I think it is called (electric) ignition switch. This is the part that gets broken most of the times.
