my 91 mazda 626 the engine is revving while driving

while i am driving  the rpm's will jump from 1500 to 4000 for just a second does anyone out there have any ideas to fix the problem

probley a sensor on transmission going bad,or something going on inside trans.have it checked by trans shop or mechanic you trust.

Have the throttle position sensor checked. Also, make sure the engine is actually revving that high -- is it accompanied by a different engine sound? It's not unheard of for the tachometers to go bad in the dash cluster -- I had one in a Chrysler Sebring that literally had a mind of its own after about 70k miles.
