I have a 1986 Chevy Silverado S20 Pickup that turns over and will start for a few seconds if I pour some gas into the carburetor. Is this a fuel pump issue?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Have a 1986 Chevy Silverado with 59000 original miles. Has bad bearings
and so I only use it once a month to haul trash to the landfill. I rarely use it
and when I tried to start it a week ago the battery was too weak to turn it
over. Charged the battery and now it turns over fine but will not start. I
poured some gas into the carb and it starts and runs for a few seconds then
shuts off again. Has gas, did this same procedure 10-15 times with the same
results. Cannot afford to take it to the shop. Is this a fuel pump issue?
Thanks, Bill

First thing to do is to turn the key to the on position to see if you can hear the fuel pump prime up, run. It may have lost power due to a bad wire or connection, usually the ground wire Change the fuel filter. It should be under the drivers side door. If it still does not start then check the fuel pressure. It should be 9 to 13lbs pressure. You can rent a fuel pressure gauge from an auto parts store.
