Asked by Jonathon Feb 19, 2016 at 02:58 PM about the 1998 Ford Explorer 4 Dr XLT 4WD SUV

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Check engine light keeps coming on after
numerous repairs. Replaced coil pack wires and
plugs twice within the yr. Misfire in cylinder 3 is
latest code and as I was driving on the hwy the CEL
was flashing. What else can be the problem?

Own four explorers between 96 and 2003. Just some of the quirks I've noticed. Seems the engine likes Motorcraft parts only. Especially the coil. The specs for the resistance of the motorcraft coil are exacting. I once purchased a non-Motorcraft coil which outside ford specs out of the box. Same goes for plug wires and plugs. Purchase a HEI spark detector (about fifteen bucks) and check the # 3 cylinder for misfire. Check the # 3 plug and check the gap and condition. If it is fouled determine why it is fouling.

Could be a warped cylinder. Also check for cracks in your distributor cap. And shake all sensor wires. Could be nothing more than a fuse. Also have you tried unplugging the battery for thirty minutes both sides and resetting the ECM codes
