I would do it every 5,000 miles regardless of what Jeep recommends but you should read your owners manual. The first change I would do at 3,000 miles but I like to make my cars last so I am not cheap on the oil changes.

You should change your oil every 3000 miles. Cherokees (2.4L) have a issue with oil consumption. 9/10 times going over 3000 the vehicle will cut off on you from lack of oil in the engine.

This is so true!!! My Jeep Cherokee cut off every 2 months and it’s always been because I didn’t have any oil. I have to get an oil change every 2800 miles

I would have Jeep check everything to make sure you don’t have a lemon. My car cut off with 1800 miles— lost all control. Drove it to the dealership to have them look at it. They said it was low on oil. With 3800 miles (2000 miles later) the same thing happened. With 4K miles, it lost power for the 4th time. It turns out the pistons were scored and the oil was burning off without showing signs of a leak on my garage floor. They needed to replace the damaged engine at 4K miles and I am in the process of a buy back bc it was faulty. Scary- ask them to check it. I had a 2018 Compass. The same happened with my 2016 Cherokee.

I am so thankful I was in a parking lot instead of on the freeway. I have a 2016 Jeep Cherokee with about 30,800 miles. Thursday, after work, I drove the car about 10 miles on the freeway. I exited the freeway and pulled into a parking lot, all of the sudden the car made a 'ding' sound, the engine died, steering locked up, the battery light flashed and a notification popped up that said to put the transmission in park and select the desired gear. Luckily, after the car came to a rolling stop, I was able to put the car in park, turn it off and restart it. I called to make an appointment and the soonest appointment they have is 4 days from now. The best part is the service adviser told me it would be nearly impossible to duplicate the problem. I started searching online and haven't found very much information, except to check the oil because the engine is designed to shut off when oil is low. I just checked it and it is about half way up the stick and in the safe zone. We are supposed to go to Oregon up the coast for Thanksgiving and I am really worried the dealership is not going to figure it out in time. I am afraid to drive this car and had to take an Uber to work and from work yesterday.

My 2018 Cherokee latitude has yet to have an oil change or request one. I'm on this site 'cause it's causing me concern that it is taking so long for it to request one. I'm currently at 5,800 miles with zero problems...but I also don't want to create any problems.

These 2.4L engines need a thicker oil. Switch to a full synthetic 5w-30 and the problems with oil burning goes away.

I have had this problem 3 times on my 2015 Jeep Cherokee Sport. I always take my Jeep to the dealership for service. The 1st time about a year ago, it shut down on me, the service advisor said the technician should be putting oil change sticker at 5000 miles not 6000 miles (my problem right). I trust them to put the correct sticker. I had my oil changed in Nov 2018, I should have checked the sticker (my vault right) it shut down on me 2 days ago. I was able to restart it after a few minutes & sent back home. I checked the oil stick it was bone dry! The sticker said I still had another 1000 miles to go before oil change. I pulled my paperwork from last oil change and and it was now just at 5000 miles since last oil change. WTH?? Went to Auto Zone and bought 1 quart of synthetic oil at $10 dollars and put it in so I could drive to dealership to get oil changed. Service Advisor again said the tech should be putting sticker at 5000, but maybe they will now put at 4500 miles, just in case. They do use full synthetic oil, an oil change there cost me around $70.00!! They say its because my Jeep has a Multi Air Engine, highly disappointed in this vehicle, this is the 3rd Jeep I have owned and never had this issue before. Yes it shuts down when the oil gets low to avoid damage to the engine, what about damage to me when someone plows into me because of this??

I have a brand new Cherokee. Was told I did not need to get an oil change until the "oil change indicator system" said to do so. Was getting ready for a road trip so I decided to get an oil change etc. anyway (before system said to). Took it in and was told I was two quarts low and I should really get it changed every 5,000 miles. So great, I was running around a brand new car low on oil and am now told not to pay attention to the system they have designed to let their customers know when their car needs service. Awesome.
