what would cause my 2001 tribute es to start sputtering when i get to 55 mph?

when i reach 50-55 mph it starts sputtering...then my check engine light came on

Did you ever have the fuel filter changed? On a fuel injected engine, if ithe filter is restricted and pressure is low it will cause those symptoms.

you can go to an auto parts store like O Reilly's, advance auto part's and they should be able to do it for you
