Do not disconnect the battery while your engine is running. A voltage spike might damage your ECU. If you want to test the alternator use a multi-meter and check the voltage across the battery terminals with the engine running - should be 13.5 to 14.5 volts.

Thank you for answering my question I have another question when connecting the battery to the positive side it arcs pretty bad the battery cable gets hot in the alternator gets hot only after a few minutes of running it is this normal

If you get an arc when everything is shut off there is a short or other draw in the system. The cables getting hot tells me there is a serious problem, probably a short.
