amp draw on cigarette lighter

Asked by Oct 21, 2019 at 12:20 AM about the 2010 Toyota Prius Base

Question type: General

I want to get a small heavy duty small compressor (VIAIR 70 P) to plug into
cigarette lighter to inflate tires when necessary.  Will this trip any fuses?  Will
this be dangerous or cause any problems with my 2010 Prius?

Cigarette lighter plug-in devices have caused innumerable problems with blowing fuses and frying wires/contacts in that system. So many that I recommend they never be used. If you have a twelve volt port in the car, use that instead. If not, get a compressor that has alligator clips that will clip to your twelve volt battery terminals. This can be an inconvenience, but so is repairing an electrical system.
