2003 Mazda6 loss of power when accelerating

Asked by primus115 Oct 06, 2008 at 01:20 AM about the 2003 Mazda MAZDA6 4 Dr i Sedan

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2003 Mazda6i that is very well-maintained and has about 130000 miles on it.  Recently, I have been experiencing a loss of power when accelerating on the freeway.  It seems like that it is taking a longer time for my car to build up speed than it used to.  I brought my car to the shop to have it checked but the mechanics say that there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with it.  They checked the serpentine belt, spark plugs, belt tensioning system and they said that those things check out fine.  I was wondering if you can help me out with this.  Thanks!

Have a exhaust shop check out your catalytic converter. As it ages it starts to crumble internally and clog it self up. If it is not taken care of it can blow down stream and fill the muffler or burn valves under the excess heat and strain.

Coil pack. I have a 2003 Mazda 6 two years ago, during a difficult year, I burned out my fuel pump from runnin out of gas so much. a couple weeks leading up to its dramatic demise, it would do ths exact same loss of power thing. seemingly random at first then more and more until I finally had to get a new fuel pump. Problem solved? Temporarily, For a couple months. then it started again (completely randomly too) for 3-10min at a time. then weeks went by of nothing, but then it started happening EVERY TIME AFTER 5-10MIN OF DRIVING. Mechanic discovered I needed a new coil pack $190 for the part. And I have never had that problem since (7months ago). Im not sure if that dieing fuel pump kickstarted it all but the coil pack replacement resolved it.

I had loss of power with my Mazda Demio. Turned out it was the high tension wires leading to the spark plugs, the rubber was split causing the electricity to short circuit. Wrapping it with electrical tape solved the problem until the wires could be replaced.
