Expedition heating problems

Asked by Puller1 Nov 24, 2015 at 05:36 PM about the 1998 Ford Expedition 4 Dr XLT 4WD SUV

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 1998 Ford Expedition has a weird problem. Start engine and let it run
coolant gets and hoses get hot but dash gauge reads cold and only cold air
comes out then all of a sudden gauge will go to normal operating range and
air coming out of heater will get hot. Next thing you know air gets cold and
check gauge and it is on cold again with hot coolant in engine and tank.
Could this be a bad sensor and it controls coolant flow? Help please. Almost
forgot I have the 5.4 with rear air.

I think your thermostat is stuck, it briefly opens and then snaps shut again. I would replace it with a new one.

Trying flushing cooling system with a good cooling system flush. Prestone cooling system flush is really good.
