2018 jeep compass uses excessive oil between oil changes are there many 2.4liter engines with this problem?

Asked by GuruTTW1X May 03, 2019 at 06:42 PM about the 2018 Jeep Compass Latitude 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

our brand new 2018 jeep compass 2.4L engine was low 4 qts of oil before its first oil change.  Is this a problem that jeep will address?

You really need to start checking the oil level. 4 quarts low could mean the engine was damaged.

How many miles do you put on an oil change?

3000 miles between oil changes. Vehicle has 5,000 miles on it. No visible oil leaks anywhere. Dealer only will change my oil to keep documentation on oil loss.

My 2018 Compass stalled on me twice in city traffic ! I was 1,000 miles over my oil change (not that unheard of)!! Took to the deal, no oil on the dip stick, really? I could have been killed in a heavy traffic area. What's going on!?

I have a 2017 Compass with the same issue. Uses too much oil and will shut down on me in traffic when there is no oil (500 miles over oil change due). This should be a recall issue. Someone is bound to get hurt.

I just had the same issue put before me by the car dealers who carried out the first car service for my 2018 Jeep Compass yesterday. My car odometer reading is 7389 currently. I don't know much about oil but i was told about this issue yesterday and i thought i look if some jeep compass owners encountered and found Solutions to this problem. Should i be worried? The car dealer/service centre asked me to just come back after 1000kms more.

i have been wondering why my 2018 jeep compass with 18,000 miles has been experiencing the same issue. The first time i realized it was when the oil light started flickering as i turned a corner last May. went to a gas station to get the oil checked and was down more than 2 quarts. I had had the oil changed 2000 miles earlier. since then my husband has been regularly checking my oil and now two additional times he has added more than two quarts. i just googled this yesterday and now see that this seems to be a problem alot of us jeep compass owners are experiencing. ridiculous that we have to keep checking now to be safe. am going to see what the dealer says Jodie

I have the same problem and just call the dealership and still waiting for a return call. My nephew has a 2018 jeep compass as well and he stalled in traffic with zero oil. My car has burned a quart of oil and I just had an oil change. I left a detailed message and said it was the same problem as before and it’s obviously a problem that Jeep is aware & needs to do a recall or take care of instead of ignoring.

I have problem with daughters car , bought it used from dealer with 36k on it and same thing before oil change was due down 2 quarts. I used to be a technician and ran my own shop feel in bad spot. My daughter new driver, 17 hard worker put 3k down on this car , senior in high school , pays monthly payments and feel like she has a lemon. But now seeing reports of others with brand new cars this is problem with this engine!

I called the dealership and they told me this is "normal" for all GM cars with this motor and to purchase a can of oil and keep in the car with me at all times. I told them this is BS and should be addressed with the company and recalled. He told me it happened with his GM truck and I am welcome to call Chrysler and complain but this is the standard answer they are giving the dealerships and alluded to the fact he didn't think this was a good answer either. I am really disgusted because the engine is making a weird pinging noise too!!

My daughter purchased a 2018 Jeep compass latitude 4x4. After her car stalled was told she needs to check oil add oil between oil changes if needed. No warning and oil stick dry. The last oil change they finally said to come in every 500 miles to get a handle on oil consumption. So far 300 miles and oil a bit down on stick. I brought in car today for overheating. I asked about oil consumption and they said it is normal for these cars to use oil. I think that’s there pat answer. I told him my last 4 cars over 25 years I have never had to add oil between changes. He backpedeled a bit and said she should bring car in every 500 miles to get a handle on oil consumption. 26000 miles on vehicle. I wish Jeep would own up and be honest about the issue.

I’m sorry you’re having the difficulty with your daughters car as well. I think you’re correct that’s Jeep’s “pat answer”. I could kick myself because I owned a Jeep liberty a few years ago and the engine was a complete disaster and ended up getting rid of it after two years. I had a jeep Cherokee before that and it was a good car. My family has good luck with jeeps except for my nephew and myself that purchase these Compasses. I’m disgusted with the way they’re dealing with this problem and the dishonesty and I believe I’m going to trade it in after the first of the year and I will never purchase another Jeep again!!

So glad I found this forum. I was 500 miles over my oil change on my 2018 Jeep Compass that currently has 48,000 miles on it. Everytime I turned a corner my oil level low would flicker and then the car would shut off immediately. I called the dealer and they said this is unheard of but when I went in for my oil change to see if that could be the issue there was no oil on the dipstick, this vehicle is burning oil like crazy.

Wow! I’m so happy I found this forum! I’m having the same issue! my 2018 compass stalled three times today in traffic! I could’ve died! this is ridiculous that Jeep isn’t taking care of this!

I also had this happen to my daughters car .... this car is unsafe, no new car should need oil every 500 miles .... and specially when so many people are having the same the same problem ....let’s put all this over social media !!!!!

I had the same problem. Car stalled on me when i was merging onto a highway. It stalled again when i was making a right hand turn in the middle of an intersection. I checked my oil and not a drop. I am not due for an oil change for another 400 miles.

Well, currently looking for a recall because my compass 2017 (38k miles) is doing the same thing. I took it to all the oil changes of dealer and have always performed additional oil checks on my own. The last time (November 2019) my husband checked oil stick and it was dry. He said it was a miracle the motor did not brake on me. I did an emergency oil add and took it to change oil and filter a week later. Today (February 22) I’m doing another oil change because low oil light came on yesterday. The place I take my car has records and told me it’s not due for a change and I explained that the low oil light came on. He told me to do research to see if there is a recall on this issue and came up with this forum. Thinking of giving my compass in trade in soon

I had the same thing happen. Jeep made me do an oil consumption test. After 4 or 5 trips to the dealership over several months and a lot of arguments, they finally agreed to put a new motor in it. I was told the Chrysler standard is it can burn up to 1 quart every 2000 miles which is ridiculous for a brand new car. This is a huge problem with the Compass and a safety issue.

Thank you all for the replies...I am disgusted that Chrysler thinks this is "normal" and am thinking of trading in my Jeep soon. I don't think they will change the motor at the dealership where I purchased mine. My nephew bought his there as well and had his completely run out of oil and shut down in traffic. Maybe I need to convince him to get together and see what we can do. It is a busy huge dealership and I don't think they give a damn, quite frankly....sad this is definitely a big problem!!

I have had my 2018 Jeep Compass stall twice on me...I haven’t had the car a year yet and I’ve had 2 oil changes and had to have the oil topped off twice!!! I’m so glad it’s not just ME!!!

Same here. 2018 Jeep Compass, stalled a few times at the end of my street. Now I drive around with a funnel and quarts of oil. What year is this? 1978? I am swearing off Jeep. My wife has a Grand Cherokee and we've had a few of those which has served us well, but I live in the Detroit area and hear about the culture at FCA engineering - not exactly a tightly run ship.

Same issue with my 2018 Compass on top of numerous other issues. I'm currently in the middle of a 500 mile oil consumption test and after only 300 miles the oil change required message came on last night. Never again will I put myself in a Jeep. Worst car decision ever.

2019 Jeep Compass, just got towed to the dealership yesterday. Today they called and gave me the same bs. I just had my oil changed in January, but there's barely any oil left as of today. Now I'm scheduled for an oil consumption test. I would have never bought this car if I had known about all these issues. They also updated my software, which apparently should have let new know about the oil issue... yet I never received anything saying the car's software needed updated, and there's zero recalls for my car.

This is totally unacceptable! If you all can come up with any ideas on how we can get Chrysler to address this issue I would be on board. If we all send these and many other threads to Corporate or Social Media maybe they will have to do something. This really sucks in plain English!!!

Have had the same issues everyone else has. 36042 miles. Just told I'm getting a new engine today.

This just happened to me right before I took a long highway trip with a kid. I went for an oil change and they said it was nearly empty and to check for engine damage. When I called the Jeep people they said I should be checking the oil every time that I put gas in it. WHAT??!! In a vehicle with under 40 000kms on it? They said I have to pay for an oil change and do a consumption test and check the oil levels 4-5 times and then if there is an issue they will run a diagnostic on the engine... But any damage may have resulted because I ran the engine on low oil. WHAT AGAIN??!! Like it is my fault?! This is infuriating and I hate how smug the guy is... What the hell am I supposed to do? Pay for everyt hign to find out they blame me and then pay for any damage to an engine under 40 000? Come on.

I just purchased a used 2018 Jeep Compass in January and it only had 33,000 miles on the engine. They informed me that they had performed all of the services including an oil change before selling me the car. This being a reputable dealership and no issues there. I noticed after a few months it seemed to be running rough and especially when first starting the vehicle in the morning. Every so often when turning, the engine oil light would flash on and then off. Then about a week later it began to stall when turning. I checked my oil and sure enough it was empty. I called the dealership and they said that it is a "known issue" and to have to check the oil frequently and add where necessary. I told him that is unacceptable considering a cars engine does not burn oil like this since the 1970's. With my 10 years experience being in the automotive industry and working for dealerships in the service department, I called BS on Jeep and told him he needed to do something because I should not have to add oil to my car, ever. He told me to bring it in to do an oil consumption test. i.e. I paid for an oil change and then drive it normally for 1,500 miles then bring it back in to the dealership for them to tell me it burns oil. I know they have to follow protocol to get issues covered under warranty so I get it. Its been 1,000 miles and I checked my oil level and its already 1-2 quarts low. Even if they replace the engine, have they fixed the problem with that model? That is my concern. Because they will just be putting in the same engine, just new and obviously we all know the engineering messed up big on this one. This is my first Jeep and may be my last.

Same thing happened to me with my 2018 Jeep Compass. Bought it brand new and right before it’s first oil change it would stall while making a turn. Luckily there were no cars around. Went to the dealership and sure enough the oil was empty and I had to do an oil consumption test. Then 1 test turned into several tests. Every time I’d sit in the lobby for 2-3 hours just to be told to come back after another 1,000 miles. Once I hit 18,000 miles I was told I’d have a final test after 1,500 miles. Finally after being close to 20,000 miles they agreed that they would replace my engine. It’s ridiculous the amount of hoops one has to jump through just to get them to fix this issue

Same issue - only 40k miles (had bought brand new) and nothing but trouble. Went 1500 after an oil change and have to bring in for consumption test. Checked myself today and it’s totally dry. Those that had a new engine put in as a solution- did it solve the issue? I am at a loss.

I bought a 2018 Jeep compass in August of 2019 with only 3000 miles on it. My dad was checking things on my basically new car at 4000 miles and I was over 2 quarts low on oil. We bought oil and topped it off ourselves and I got an oil change later that week worried the dealership that sold me the car messed up or didn't properly check things before selling me the car. Now I'm at 7000 miles a year after buying the car and im down another 2 or 3 quarts. This is a common problem, but does anyone have a solution? I love the car but I can't tolerate checking the oil and refilling it every time I fill up my gas tank? If there is no solution I'm trading my jeep in for another (non-jeep) vehicle.

This is a known issue that the dealership will try to put off repairing. This happened to us 3x when my wife was driving the car with our infant. After persistent bitching the entire engine was replaced. We also filed a lemon law case against FCA and won. I would recommend the same. Do not listen to people telling you to just check your oil and keep some in the car. We bought this vehicle new. If I spent $4k on an old YJ checking oil wouldn't be an issue. Do not allow FCA to get away with this incompetence nor allow them to tell you buring 4 quarts in 2k miles is "normal"

My daughter has a 2019 compass and her car has the same issues. When cold start it sounds like a clunker. When i took it to the dearship they said that they had to add a quart of oil. She only has 8500 miles and she had an oil change at 6k miles. And, she also had her call stop/stall while she was on the road. This is horrific. I am shocked to see all the same complaints and nothing being done about this. I will follow up with the dealer and see what can be done. I am not holding my breath but will diffenitly address the problem. This should not be happening.

I bought a 2018 compass new and had the same issues with the car stalling once I hit around 15,000 miles. The dealership replaced the engine because it was damaged even though I had 2,000 miles left until next service (they tried to claim I missed an oil change but luckily all services were at the dealer). Now at around 35,000 miles and 115 miles left until the next service the car stalled again. If they actually replace the engine again I would bet money it happens after another 10-15k miles. This car is a lemon.

Chrysler is aware of the death trap, I actually just went and picked my 2018 compass back up from the shop, the first time they couldn't find anything wrong, this time I was told Chrysler is aware of it and that I needed to drive it 1,500 miles then take it back and let them check the oil take pictures ect.. my daughter was with me this time and we was on a curvy road and the whole car shut down and we had a truck coming up behind us!! Luckily for us it was a older couple and stopped far enough behind us that nobody else would have hit us. This is my first brand new car, and I can't believe it's gave me nothing but trouble since I bought it, it went into limp mode on me in Virginia when I was visiting my son at AIT, I was told to limp it back to Ga, and no jeep dealership could help me in Virginia I actually had to go to a Ford dealership for help and they went above and beyond. I'm so scared my daughter is going to be with me one day and it do it again and her get hurt, I don't even want to drive it anymore, I rather walk at this point at least I know my daughter will be safer.

2018 Jeep Compass purchased September 2020 with 48,000 miles. Beautiful Car-Sour Lemon. Got oil change with Synthetic Oil and two weeks later Absolutely no Oil. No oil leak in driveway and no smoking So disappointed as my son and daughter planned to both purchase a Wrangler soon and its a No-Go after researching why Im having No Oil, No Low Oil Indicator Light and vehicle stalled out and shut off on a busy highway. This car is Dangerous. So disappointed to have this beautiful NEW LEMON.

Hi my used 2018 jeep compass limited is consuming fuel so much and i would fill the gas tank and it would tell me that the fuel range is only 198- 210 miles. Does anyone know what could be cause or why its does that? I roughly drive it about 20-40miles a day.

20

I have a 2018 Jeep Compass and had the very same thing happen to me. Engine stall, no power, hesitation to turn back on while at an intersection with my two children in the car! Had no clue what the cause was. Would have never imagined it was due to the oil being EMPTY! No oil, none.... not a drop on the dip stick. It was 200 miles short of being due for an oil change. I am not believing that this problem is not a recall at this point with so many people having the same issue.... it needs to be addressed... someone can get hurt! I love my jeep so I am overly disappointed with this issue. I hope they figure out a solution to the problem. sign this petition!!! for a change to be made http://chng.it/gVBgy6YWy6
