Rear axle ratios

Asked by GuruXYYGM Oct 08, 2018 at 08:49 AM about the 2018 GMC Acadia SLT-1 FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Why do the new Acadias have the option for a 3:87 or 3:16 rear axle?  Is the
difference tied to the engine (i.e. 2.5 liter 4 or 3 liter V-6)?  Seems like this
should be relevant only to AWD vehicles.  Is that correct?

It is more relevant to the vehicle's towing capacity.

Sounds plausible. These different gear ratios were specifically indicated for the rear axle, so I presume this option would only apply to AWD versions with the towing package.
