What is wrong with my clutch? 98 Ford Escort LX

I'll describe it like when you're low on brake fluid... My clutch pedal wouldn't "catch" until
fully pressed down.. and when shifting gears i would have to force it into it.. up until I
couldn't force it it just wouldn't go into a gear.. please help.

Well I pretty sure it's right next to the radiator over flow ..open Hood and on left side to the front passenger side with a black cap .i have a 98 Ford escort LX. I having issues now on mine .. time to trade up!
