98 ford escort not picking up speed

When driving up hill I will give gas and the rpm will
shoot to 4000 but the car will lose speed And
sometimes when I stop then go the car starts going
slow then suddenly pick up speed seems like when
I release the gas and press again it will sometimes
fix its self but never on a hill only after I get to the
top will it pick up speed

If it's a standard shift, the clutch might be slipping. If it's an automatic, sounds like the transmission is slipping. Best to get it to a transmission shop and have a look. If you are lucky it might just be low on fluid. If it's a high miles car, it might be something more. Time to trade. I hope this helps
