If it's a 2018, take it back to the dealer.

I just had the same problem, 2018 Ford Escape gear shift lights not working. I took it to the dealer and the dealer said that 2018 they do not have lights for the gear shift because everything is on the dash.

A guy on justanswer.com looked at the wiring diagram in February and there is no light there any more. If you have paddle shifters on the steering wheel, those will light up. Someone else in the know said Ford tends to strip the add- ons on models considered for discontinuation.

That's odd, I came here looking for answers to the same problem. Thing is my lights did turn on when I purchased the vehicle. It wasn't until 2 months after I bought it that it stopped working

Would need to know make (assume it's a Ford) model, year, and mileage to make any sort of guess.

I bought my Ford Escape SEL in June and the lights worked on the gearshift. They stopped working and I went to the dealership service dept. 45 minutes later they told me there were no lights there! Funny, they were there when I bought it.

I just purchased my 2018 Ford Escape a week ago and noticed that my gear shift light didn't light up . I went to Brandon Ford where I purchased my Escape and the service advisor took it back and he said the 2018 doesn't have it . I'm not sure if the Titanium model has it or not because it's the expensive brand . That doesn't make sense to me because the other gears lights up .

I have a 2018 Escape Titanium and my gear shift lights have never worked from day1. Was told by dealer that they were discontinued this model year. A senseless move on Fords part probably to save $. Having it on the dash just doesn’t cut it for me, especially at night.

I bought a 2019 Ford Escape Titanium. The shifter does NOT light up. I just filed a formal complaint (11 Dec 2019) with Ford over this issue. My complaint case # is CAS25123976. My advice is to contact Ford and complain. The squeaky wheel gets the grease.

My 2019 Ford Escape Titanium had lights for one year then suddenly quit. Took it to the dealer and they said there were never any lights on the gear shift console!!! Very frustrating

I swear I had gear shift lights on my 2018 Ford Escape Titanium. Called the dealer to fix and they said they were never there. For two years I was sure they were lit.

If we keep at it enough, Ford may have to issue us a retro-fit kit with light!

For me, (2016 Escape Titanium), has shift letter lights but no indication. Indication on dash. Makes no sense. Why light up the letters with no indication?

I previously had a 2015 Escape, Titanium so it had a lot of goodies on it. But...it did NOT have a gear shift light-yes, it was on the dash but that DOES NOT HELP. Then I had a 2018 Fusion. Which had the round shifter, but did have gear shift lights. Aside from this issue, I had loved my Escape so when I realized I needed an SUV again, I bought a 2018 Escape and, again, no gear shift lights. To me, this is something basic that should NOT be removed-take off the colored interior lights or something else that is not needed, but keep the gearshift light!

Dustin wham son makes good sense, I don’t need all the letters to light up and still have no indication of what gear I’m in! My 2018 Titanium was purchased pre-owned, but still at a pretty penny of a price. Now I KNOW I’m not the only crazy one out here that swears the shifter indicator used to light up! Seems like such a simple thing to provide when you consider all the other “Bells & Whistles” included in the package. I Love the instrument panel options, including the numeric speedometer, but By Golly I Want to know what gear I’m in or going in when I look down at my shifter to release/engage the electronic EBrake. Then Again.... I drove nothing but Standard Tranny for years & they didn’t light up, yet I knew what gear I was in by the pattern, not much pattern to straight back & forth. Evidently there were issues with this seemingly simple feature & if you look, the newer models have a Dial Knob, Yes! Like a volume control on a stereo, So I guess when they ran out of the luminary parts they just quit putting them in, in preparation for the new idea, which seems even more dangerous/harder to tell what gear that your in!. NOW, does anyone think if we all complain, they’ll do a little minor recall of sorts to remedy the situation on an almost 3 yr old vehicle? I’m pretty adamant about this!!! Opinions, Please!

I also have purchased (Pre-Owned... what ever the f@#K that means) Ford Escape 2018 with no transmission shifter lights. This is a flat out safety issue. This is a blatant failure in the engineering department... and as long was we whine about it in forums that Ford never visits... and dealers are not in a rush to rock the boat... we're stuck...OR ARE WE!!! I am presently interviewing attorneys who specialize in CLASS ACTION law suits against just about every car manufacturer... Nobody at Ford wants ANOTHER class action lawsuit over something as stupid as a failure to provide a lit transmission shifter that any reasonable adult would expect for his or her family safety. Isn't it a thrill to see an accident unfold on the incline in front of you... on a unlighted two lane thorough fare and you look down at the transmission shifter and you can't readily see a lower gear to not only slow down... but keep a safe distance between you and the idiot behind you who's been tailgating for the last couple of miles. You're fumbling around... where's the low gear... you have a car full of kids and camping equipment... you can't stay in drive... you have to keep going but at a lower ratio. WTF... there's no light on the transmission shifter. I need to raise a retainer to build a solid case for class action for cause... safety violations, malfeasance, misrepresentation, and on. The fix is about $400-..... but Ford has to design it and install it. There's an old expression: "You don't ask... you don't get". Let's get this class action going. If you're interested contact me at anarcher@att.net. Thanks

I have the same problem. Bought 2019 Ford Escape in June, had light on in gearshift area until one day they were not lit. Went to the dealer and was told “ there wasn’t any light there”. Was told in round about way that I was seeing things!!!!

Same thing happened to me. Gearshift lights were working and then they weren't. Took it to the dealer and said it never had a light there. I told them it did and they never wanted to help me. Bad customer service. Sounded like they did not want to even take the time to evaluate the situation.

Is there a 'Service bulletin' at the NTSB that might allow a customer to complain and get a shifter light installed?
