I have a 1979 El Camino my son took the dash off to replace a plug and broke
the speedometer needle off the speedometer. Is there a way to replace just the
needle? or do you have to replace the whole speedometer which will also
change the mileage.

If this can't be repaired then you'll have to replace it, and being a mechanical unit you should be able to set the mileage on it before installing it.
